Restorative Afternoon: Healthy Backs

AMany of us have suffered from back pain at some point. From mild discomfort to chronic pain, back pain is disruptive and upsetting to our daily life. In this workshop we will explore how to ease and prevent back pain through deep relaxation.

Yoga teaches us that we are more than just this physical body. By understanding the mind-body connection, we can begin to realise how our repressed feelings and deepest fears are literally holding us back. The back is a symbolic dumping ground!

The lower back is a place where we hold fear that we are no safe, the middle back symbolises our fear of stepping outwardly into the world in our true power, and the upper back carries frustration, anger and the lack of ability to express our feelings of love.

In this workshop Mel will introduce the bodymind patterns that can relate to muscular back pain (upper, middle and lower), as well as touching briefly on the shoulders, pelvis and spine. We will also increase our understanding of how our daily habits such as posture and repetitive activities can result in some muscles being over-worked and others under-used, resulting in misalignment of the spine and weaknesses.

The discussions will be held in the safe and soothing practices of restorative yoga and yoga nidra. As stress plays a big role in muscle tension, the reduction of stress and the greater ease of breathing allows the mind to enter into a deeper state of awareness. This awareness allows us to understand more deeply the bodymind connection, and as we discover and understand the messages behind our back pain, we can move closer to deep awareness of ourselves, and the changes we may need to make in our lives.
